Through the weeks of deep snow
we walked above the ground
on fallen sky, as though we did
not come of root and leaf, as though
we had only air and weather
for our difficult home.
But now
as March warms, and the rivulets
run like birdsong on the slopes,
and the branches of light sing in the hills,
slowly we return to earth.

As winter winds down, stretch your skills with color work and steeking, explore the writings of one of knitting’s most beloved teachers, or join us in the circle for knitting, conversation, and community.

All classes and events take place in-person in the shop. Zoom option available for the monthly book club. Call or stop in the shop to reserve your spot.

Introduction to Color Work

Saturday, March 1, 10:30 – 12:30                   color work swatch
Instructor: Paula Herbert
Cost: $15, pattern included
Level: Advanced Beginner – Intermediate

Learn how to carry color on both the knit and purl side of a swatch which can then be used in the steeking class the following week.

Suggested yarn: Wool yarn of your choice, at least two contrasting colors, DK, worsted, or Aran weights. If you plan to do the steeking class, you will need to make two swatches. The swatches are approximately 8” x 8” and have a button band.  50 yds of each color would be more than enough.

Needles: Size appropriate to the wool.

The pattern for the swatch is available here.

Introduction to Steeking

Saturday, March 8, 10:30 – 12:30                   color work swatch
Instructor: Bill Lanza
Cost: $15, pattern included
Level: Advanced Beginner – Intermediate

In this class we will be practicing steeking a piece of knit work using two different reinforcement methods. Method one will use a crochet hook and a contrasting yarn. The second method will be using a sewing machine. Both methods work equally well.

After the steek is reinforced, we will take scissors to the work and cut it in two. 😳 Scary, I know, but it works! The piece will not unravel, fire and brimstone will not fall from the sky, and the sun will come up tomorrow. Trust me.

Depending on the time we will also show how to add a button band and how to conceal the edge stiches on the back side.

Prerequisite: Experience with color work knitting (knitting two colors at once). We recommend the Introduction to Color Work class on March 1 to prepare for this class.

Homework: Prior to coming to class please complete the two swatches, so as not to hold things up. I would like to get right to it. You can download the pattern here or contact the shop for a copy.
